There’s a Pair of Giant Hands Emerging From Venice’s Grand Canal

hands

The threat that rising sea levels pose to the city of Venice’s very existence is well-documented from a scientific point of view. But a new art installation highlights the issue and the part that people must play in fighting climate change from a more haunting and emotional angle. Two giant hands reach out of the waters of famed Grand Canal, grasping the exterior of the Ca’ Sagredo Hotel. The sculpture, entitled Support, is the work of Italian sculptor Lorenzo Quinn for the Venice Biennale. In a post on Instagram, Quinn stated that the piece is meant to evoke the message that “united we can make a stand to curb the climate change that affects us all. We must all collectively think of how we can protect our planet and by doing that we can protect our national heritage sites.”

Support will be on display until November 26.
