Gastrointestinal problems are the main health concern in this part of the country—make sure that your food is cooked thoroughly in a hygienic environment. A rating system, giving restaurants grades from A to C, is intended to help you find the better places. However, A ratings are only awarded to those who pay, so don’t turn up your nose at a B restaurant. Altitude sickness can be a problem if you're flying into northwest Yunnan; make sure to take it easy for the first day or two after arriving.
