Health and Safety

Myanmar is very hot for much of the year, and it's essential to stay hydrated and protect your skin. We recommend using bottled water, even for brushing your teeth. Sunscreen is only available at supermarkets, but bring your own if you have fair skin.

Malaria is a problem in rural Myanmar. Be vigilant about bug spray, which is available in supermarkets, and sleep with the windows closed or inside a mosquito net.

The state of health care in Myanmar is very poor and HIV/AIDS is an issue; avoid needles at local hospitals. Poor food-hygiene practices of street vendors poses your biggest sickness risk in the country, so note the food handling of vendors before ordering.

Myanmar is extremely safe. Crime, especially against foreigners, is severely punished. Even petty crime, such as pickpocketing, is rare. Visitors do not need to be concerned about wearing backpacks or carrying open-top tote bags or purses. The Burmese, many of whom are devout Buddhists, are markedly friendly; however, you may be "robbed" by paying too much for a taxi or jade at the markets.
