Hurricane Joaquin

Hurricane Joaquin proved to be a particularly destructive storm in the southern Bahamas in October 2015. As the tropical storm escalated rapidly to become a Category 4 hurricane, it also moved through the region very slowly, causing widespread damage both from its high winds and its strong tidal surge. Islands that took direct hits included Crooked and Acklins Islands, southern Long Island, Rum Cay, Samana Cay, and San Salvador. Many of the hotels, fishing lodges, and restaurants on those islands suffered serious damage and will require significant repairs. At this writing travel and tourism to the region was expected to be affected through at least February 2016, but for those establishments that suffered more catastrophic damage, recovery could take much longer.
