Why We Like It

The peaceful, reflective atmosphere is a nice way to bookend a busy day. The rooms are efficient, the staff is pleasant, and the central location is very practical.

Fodor's Expert Review

In 1980, the Schottenstift Benedictine order opened a Bed & Breakfast-style guesthouse next door to its abbey. Since then, guests from all over the world have gotten the feel for how the monks live: The guesthouse is in a secluded spot, though in the heart of the Innere Stadt, there are no televisions or radios in the rooms, and the peel of church bells ring out into the courtyard. The hotel has been recently renovated and enlarged to add larger, three- and four-room suites.

Tip If you arrive after reception closes (generally 7 p.m.), use your four-digit booking code to enter.

Tranquility is the order of the day. Soft hues and sunlight fill the rooms, which look out onto the courtyard. The updated rooms have hardwood floors and still simple, yet modish decor. There is wifi throughout, but be warned: the thick walls of the abbey can make service sketchy. A coffeemaker is provided in each room.
