Fodor's Expert Review Walter Bauer

$$$$ District 1/Innere Stadt Austrian

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Hidden away in one of the quietest quarters of historic Vienna, this charming and unpretentious Michelin-starred restaurant serves the very best in traditional cuisine. Even the everyman Leberkäse—an artery-blocking loaf of pork, bacon, corned beef, and onions—is turned into a delectable delight (and served with a dash of mustard). More modern and international fare, such as foie gras with confits and brioche, are specialties not to be missed. The quality-crazy owner has over the years encouraged some of Austria's greatest chefs, including Christian Domschitz and Michael Feuerbrand, to perform their very best in his kitchen, using only the finest ingredients. A selection of top-quality most popular Austrian wines—including reds Gradenthal and Blaufrankisch, and white Grüner Veltliner—and friendly service make this a winner.
