Fodor's Choice

Why We Like It

The hotel feels very understated but the focus is on quality customer service. There's an old-world elegance to this period building set in a very clean and safe neighborhood. And staying in a residential neighborhood, you won't be gouged by restaurants catering to tourists. It's an ideal budget option if you want to spend a lot of time exploring the Vatican.

Fodor's Expert Review

This cute, family-run hotel on the third floor of a 19th-century palazzo offers rock-bottom rates a five-minute walk from the Vatican. You won't find frills, but you will find clean rooms with free Wi-Fi. There's no breakfast and no bar, but the hotel has a coffee and tea machine that guests are able to use throughout the day.

Bathrooms are small and clean with comfortable modern beds and fluffy pillows. There's minimal decor with nothing on the walls, and simple beds with red coverlets. But rooms are well-lit and a comfortable place to rest your head. All include a flat-screen TV, air conditioning, and free Wi-Fi.

You Should Know Some guests have complained of thin walls during prime booking seasons.

Bathroom

Bathrooms are tiled in white, with a private shower and hairdryer. They are small spaces that could use an upgrade, but fine for a short stay. Towels are quite thin.

Tip Liquid soap is provided but it's best to bring your own toiletries.

Lobby

The hotel is on the third floor of the building. When you walk in you'll find a small check-in desk under celestially-painted ceilings. There are marble statues and fresh flowers everywhere, giving the place a homey feel.

The hotel is very convenient if you want to spend a lot of timing exploring the many offerings of Vatican City. It's only a 5-minute to Ottaviano Metro Station, which makes it easy to get into centro storico and beyond. Taxis are also plentiful here in front of the Vatican. It's hard to get a great burger in Rome, but Birretta Wine and Food (1-minute walk) has a great selection of tasty burgers that rarely disappoint. Restaurants around the Vatican are typically pricey, but Pizzeria Giacomelli (4-minute walk) is very reasonable and has great pies that are popular among locals.

Bars
