St. Petersburg is served by new facilities at Pulkovo Airport, about 17 km (11 miles) south of central St. Petersburg.

Pulkovo serves domestic and foreign airlines. St. Petersburg air carrier Rossiya, Russia's second-largest airline after Aeroflot, offers direct flights to and from 27 countries. Aeroflot only flies between St. Petersburg and Moscow, where passengers must take connecting flights to other destinations. Its tough competitor, Transaero, offers both domestic and international flights to such destinations as Egypt, Thailand, Japan, the Dominican Republic, and India.
