Once you're done wandering the shops and handful of notable attractions Downtown, consider heading south to Midtown. The neighborhood has some of Anchorage's best restaurants and plenty of gear stores to help prep your out-of-town adventures. Midtown is sandwiched between high-traffic throughways, but these are lined with diverse shops proffering everything from high-quality brews to artisan truffles to secondhand camp stoves. It's also a good neighborhood to stay in if you'd rather be slightly outside the main tourist fray. In this functional section of Anchorage, however, don't expect much in the way of sightseeing.
