Why We Like It

The view, the view, the view. West Hawaii may have the sunsets, but east Hawaii has the sunrises, and that view is the perfect way to start your day after a night of deep sleep. If you’re lucky, you just might catch a glimpse of dolphins or whales as you take in the 180 degree views.

Fodor's Expert Review

On a bluff above Honolii surf beach, this modern 5,400-square-foot home is 2 miles from downtown Hilo and features four rooms—each with patio, deluxe bedding, and grand ocean views within earshot of the surf. Fresh flowers and artful decor add a warm, tropical touch. Proprietors Maria Macias and Ricardo Zepeda serve a full hot breakfast every morning on an outdoor deck or in the kitchen's bay-window dining area. From their lanai, guests can watch spinner dolphins or migrating whales during whale season. These are ideal accommodations for honeymooners and retired travelers.

Tip Though there is plenty to do on the east side of the island, plan to stay and linger a little longer than you normally might. This B&B offers really unique views and whether you’re in the pool, hot tub, or relaxing on the lanai, you will feel relaxed.

Room

There are four guest rooms, each with their own bathrooms and private outdoor entrances. Oh, and each one has an awe inspiring view of the Pacific. Décor is bright, full of island ease and comfort. One of the rooms, the Pele Suite, has a kitchenette, great for longer term travelers. The Pele Suite also stands out because of its darker, fiery colors that pay homage to the Hawaiian fire and volcano goddess, Pele.

You Should Know There is a strict limit of two guests per room to help keep a quiet, relaxed tone. This is probably not the best choice for families.

Bathroom

Each bathroom is decently sized with a shower, toilet, and sink. Each room’s bathroom is en suite, no need to mingle when you have to tinkle.

Lobby

When guests arrive they are greeted at the front of the house and led to their rooms by their hosts. The front of the house is full of lovely flowering plants.

You Should Know The driveway is steep and short – if that scares you, try to arrive during daylight hours.

Pool

There is a small pool and hot tub with full ocean view on the back side of the house.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

Though it’s pretty easy to get to the B&B with a cab or ride share, you’ll need a rental car to explore the island.

Restaurants

Your B&B hosts recommend Sombat’s (9 minute drive) for well-priced Thai food, as well as Pineapple’s (8 minute drive) for higher end cocktails made with fresh, local ingredients, stop by and dinner on their patio. Yes, they even have a cocktail served to you INSIDE a pineapple.

Bars

With mostly Kona Brewery beers on tap and a standard bar full of liquor, Hilo Town Tavern (8 minute drive) is your best bet for rubbing elbows with locals at this semi-dive bar that has live music, sports on a few screens, and a couple of pool tables. At Moon & Turtle (7 minute drive) you’ll definitely start the night out right with their handcrafted island cocktail menu. You’ll love it so much you’ll want to stick around for pupus or their small plate dinners.
