Lokahi Lodge

19-4178 Wright Road, Volcano Village, Hawaii 96785

Why We Like It

Location combined with affordability and comfort make this a great choice for anyone looking to spend a good bit of time on the east side of Hawaii Island.

Fodor's Expert Review

Great for families and the more budget-conscious traveler, the Lokahi Lodge is simple and unassuming, but with enough comfort and space to make for a very pleasant stay. This limited service hotel is nestled in the Volcano rainforest, which helps to make it very quiet and private. It’s also just a five minute drive to one of the Big Island’s most popular tourist attractions, Volcano National Park.

Tip Volcano evenings can get pretty cold (and days pretty warm). Be sure to pack layers so that you can enjoy both inside and outside of your room whenever you like – the rainforest sounds and views are wonderful.

Room

There are five rooms at the lodge, with two different layouts. The standard room with one king and one full bed is great for families or couples traveling together. Rooms are large and comfortable, but décor is a bit outdated.

You Should Know Rollaway beds are not available at the lodge, so make sure that your party can all fit in the beds that are available.

Bathroom

Bathrooms at the lodge are gradually being renovated to switch all bathtubs to showers to make them more eco-friendly. They’re also bringing in the artsy elements that the Kilauea Hospitality Group management team loves so much which helps to set them apart from other nearby properties.

Lobby

Because it is limited service, guests need to check in at Chalet Kilauea, a 3-minute drive away.

Pool

There is a six-person hot tub around the back of the property in the garden gazebo.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

You will need a rental car to get around the Volcano area and the island.

Restaurants

Give Tuk Tuk Thai Food Wagon (3-minute drive) a try when you don’t feel like sitting down to a full meal and want to take something to go – food trucks are not particularly plentiful on the Big Island, so really tasty ones are a treat. Another great spot for grab and go breakfast or lunch is Eagles Lighthouse Café (2-minute drive) for both standard lighter fare and more Hawaiian leaning dishes like a fried rice breakfast bowl.

Bars

Go to Lava Lounge at the Kilauea Military Camp (6-minute drive) for no nonsense cocktails at great prices, as well as occasional live music. For a little more upbeat, but still laid back night life with live music, mostly Kona Brewery beers on tap and a standard bar full of liquor, Hilo Town Tavern (44-minute drive) is your best bet for rubbing elbows with locals at this semi-dive bar that has live music, sports on a few screens, and a couple of pool tables.
