The Wagner at Duck Creek

70 Main St., Wellfleet, Massachusetts 02667, USA

Why We Like It

Ideally located close enough to Wellfleet to walk to town, but with a setting on acres of grounds, woods and a marsh to make it feel private, the Wagner at Duck Creek is a charming place to stay. Staff are professional and courteous, rooms are comfortable with modern amenities, and having the Well Tavern on site is a nice perk. When new planned amenities like a gym and a pool are installed, there will be even more to like about the inn.

Fodor's Expert Review

Set on 5 wooded acres by a pond, a creek, and a salt marsh, this old inn, with 27 rooms, consists of a circa-1815 main building and two other houses from the same era. The two-room Carriage House is cabinlike, with rough barn-board and plaster walls. There's live jazz at the Well Tavern + Kitchen next door which boasts a full martini bar, light bites and desserts.

Tip The owners are always upgrading and adding amenities. Plans are in the works for a pool, gym and much more in 2018 and beyond.

Restaurants

The Wicked Oyster (1-minute walk) offers excellent fresh seafood, as well as other dishes like steaks and burgers, in a cool 1750s structure which was formerly a house. Located right on the water, The Bookstore & Restaurant (19-minute walk) has been serving up seafood since 1964. One specialty is the Cape Cod clambake, with boiled lobster, corn on the cob and steamers. The secondhand bookstore is a treasure trove and the perfect place to pick up a beach read or rediscover a classic.

Mac’s Shack (10-minute walk), offers creative cocktails with homemade infusions, draft beers on tap, a decent wine list and freshly shucked Wellfleet oysters and clams. Head to the Winslow’s Tavern (9-minute walk) for oyster happy hour (3-5pm) and bloody Marys on the lovely patio or head upstairs to the bar for a cocktail or glass of wine. The Beachcomber (6-minute drive) is one of the best bars on the Cape and a great place to get a drink right on the oceanfront.
