Fodor's Expert Review Los Mayas
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
Owners Fernando Antillas and Reyes Solano brought the spirit of Latin America with them when they opened this restaurant. The cozy, tile-floored space has a shady patio—albeit with less-than-ambient plastic patio chairs. The menu mixes New Mexican, Latin American, and South American recipes. The guacamole made table-side is a sure bet, as is the chile en nogada, a stuffed pepper in a smooth, rich, and slightly sweet walnut sauce. Entrées, such as the charbroiled skirt steak and cheese rellenos with rice and black beans, or shrimp sautéed with butter and garlic, are equally reliable. There's guitar music every night, including flamenco on Saturday. Downsides are the busloads of tourists sometimes deposited here for prearranged meals and a building in need of some upgrades.
