Europeans and students know about the chipper, winning attitude of this friendly, no-frills hotel where rooms feature wall murals by a range of artists. While some rooms have private bathrooms, others have access to shared unisex bathrooms, two per floor. Unlike many other New York City hotels, nightly rates remain consistent throughout the year: $160 with a private bathroom or $130 to share.

The basic rooms are themed, from an English cottage to a math classroom, and all exclude a television. Original artwork gives the rooms individual character, but the bold colors and floor-to-ceiling nature of the art might not suit all guests taste.
