The Blakely New York

136 W. 55th St., between 6th and 7th Aves., New York, New York, 10019, USA, New York City, New York, USA

Why We Like It

Unashamedly old school, this hotel reminds guests of the pleasures of comfy tufted couches and library-like lobbies. We love the convenience of kitchenettes in the rooms, generous freebies (breakfast, Wi-Fi, newspapers), and the addictive burgers and shakes from Black Tap.

Fodor's Expert Review

It may be a tried-and-true design motif, but it’s hard to resist the English gentleman’s club--when it’s done right, that is. The Blakely plays it up, with chesterfield couches and wood paneling in the lobby. Free continental breakfast, free Wi-Fi, a 24/7 fitness center, and free New York Times delivered daily add extra appeal.

Room

Traditionally decorated rooms have large work desks, Frette robes, and pillow-top beds. Full kitchenettes with a sink, mini-refrigerator, microwave, and coffeemaker are convenient, especially for longer-term guests.

You Should Know Rooms facing 54th Street can be noisy and some rooms have little natural light.

Bathroom

Marble bathrooms have Penhaligon bath products, shower/tub combos, spacious vanities, and large mirrors.

Tip Some suites have deep soaking tubs and marble rain showers; ask about these options when booking.

Lobby

The stately lobby resembles an aristocrat’s library, with wood-paneled walls, deep sofas and chairs, and book-lined shelves. Softly glowing lamps and Persian rugs complete the relaxing scene.

Dining

Black Tap is the midtown outpost of a downtown restaurant known for its burgers, fries, and over-the-top milkshakes. Burgers are made with several meats, including beef, bison, lamb, turkey, and chorizo (there’s also a falafel burger).

Drinking

Beyond burgers and shakes, Black Tap also serves a range of drinks including cocktails like a spicy margarita in mason jars. More than a dozen craft beers are available on tap.
