The town holds one of the largest concentrations of late-Victorian and turn-of-the-20th-century buildings in the region. Clean, uncrowded public beaches beckon, as do a marina, a renowned golf course, and two National Wildlife Refuges a dozen miles farther south. Cape Charles was established in the early 1880s as a railroad-ferry junction, but quieted down considerably after its heyday. Today, its very isolation has begun to attract people from farther and farther away.
