The only boutique hotel on the island, Quinta das Videiras has tastefully adorned rooms with antique-style furnishings, from stained-glass windows to porcelain doorknobs and an abundance of Portuguese tiles. The only original feature here is the grape vines, which make a nice, shady spot for an alfresco breakfast. Don’t expect much of a view; the rooms at the back overlook a supermarket loading bay. For a treat, the loft suite has a large roof terrace and plunge pool. Shops, bars, and restaurants are within easy reach on foot, though the nearest beach is a 3-km (2-mile) hike.
