Fodor's Expert Review Gran Hotel Gervasoni
Paseo Gervasoni 1, Valparaíso, Valparaíso, Chile
Set in a sprawling Victorian mansion that spreads across five floors built in the 1870s, the Gervasoni is a chance to step back in time to Valparaíso's more elegant past. Finding your room will involve navigating dark corridors and climbing steep stairways, but the atmosphere is enchanting, and the house still contains many of the former owner's original furnishings. If stairs are a problem, ask for a room on a lower floor. The city's mind-boggling topography means that the hotel has three entrances on different floors. Breakfast is included, and a welcome drink awaits you on the upper-level terrace.
PROS
- a chance to imagine life in Valparaíso's Victorian apogee
- convenient location
- attentive staff
CONS
- very steep stairs
- views are spoiled by a concrete office block
- some of the rooms are a bit tired
